Getting to Know Kuhn

The purpose of the woodshop curriculum is to enhance and refine your child's development of motor skills. It intends to instill confidence, attention to detail, the ability to follow plans, and the discipline to work to the best of the students' own ability, that it is rewarded by the transformation of a simple piece of wood into a beautiful object. Woodshop students learn about shop organization, tools, safety, and project construction. Emphasis will be on the different types of hand tools, small power tools, power machines, and the safety that goes along with those tools. Quality of work and safety are the most important skills learned in the class. Interest, imagination, and perseverance are the essential ingredients needed for this course.

My parents and sister, with her daughter, still live in La Crescenta.  My sister is a nurse and works at University Hospital in Los Angeles.  My parents are retired and enjoy traveling.  Doheny State Beach is one of their favorite places to camp.

I grew up in La Crescenta.  In 1977, when I was 15, my first job was an assistant teacher at a day care.  Since then teaching is the only job I’ve ever done.  I graduated from Cal State Los Angeles with a BA in Industrial Technology and a teaching credential.  In 1997 I obtained my Masters in Middle School Education from Cal State San Bernardino.  My first teaching assignment in Glendale Unified School District was in 1988.  I taught in Glendale for six years.  The courses that I taught were Wood Shop, Electronics, Drafting, Metal Shop, Print Shop, Math, Life Science, Special Education, and Stage Crew.  In 1993 I got married and moved to San Clemente and in 1994 I received my teaching assignment at Newhart.

My interests include woodworking (of course), surfing, and creating presentations on my computer.  I have a complete set of MAD magazines, the first one was published in 1952, my favorite music to listen to is Oingo Boingo, Queen, and film music composer Danny Elfman.  My favorite movies are Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride.  My favorite TV show is “The New Yankee Workshop” staring my idol Norm Abram.  I will be introducing that show to your child this year.

I’ve been married since August of 1993 to my wife Lee.  We love to travel.  We have traveled to Sicily, England, Scotland, Mexico, Florida, New York, and our favorite place to travel to is Kauai, which we have done every summer since 1997.
