Projects

Overview of Wood Working Unit
The students construct a Memo Holder, a Casserole Holder, Nut Cracker, and Wooden Bank. By building these four projects, the students will have an understanding of how to read plans to complete a project and of the safe and correct ways to use various hand tools and power machines.

Memo Holder
The Memo Holder is made using hand tools. The hand tools introduced to them include: Hand Saw, Back Saw, Coping Saw, File, Hammer, and Hand Drill. Each day the students will be shown how to do a certain step with the rest of the period spent completing that step. The students work at their own pace and the project is due when the project is complete, not at a specific date. Each step is individually graded and must be graded before they can go on to the next step. When the project is completed I will add up the scores that they have received and give them a final grade. The project is worth 100 points.

 Casserole Holder
Casserole Holder is constructed using power machines. The power machines introduced to them include: Drill Press, Jig Saw, and Table Saw. Unlike the Memo Holder, on this project each step is not individually graded. I initially grade them on how they are able to measure and correctly show me where they will drill their first two holes. The next time I grade them is when they have completed their project. The students will also have to fill out an evaluation which asks them questions on how the project was constructed. This project is worth 100 points.

Nut Cracker
Nut Cracker is constructed using power machines and some hand tools. The power machines we will be using are the Drill Press and the Bandsaw. The hand tools we will be using are the Tap and Die which are use to thread the handle and a 3/4” hole. The students will also have to fill out an evaluation which asks them questions on how the project was constructed. This project is worth 100 points.

Wood Bank
The power machines introduced to them include: Drill Press, Jig Saw, and Band Saw. We will also be using a portable Jig Saw to construct this project. The students will also have to fill out an evaluation which asks them questions on how the project was constructed. This project is worth 150 points.
